Webquest

Spring Break in
Germany:
A Webquest to get you ready!

Introduction

In just a few short weeks, we will be taking a trip to
Germany for 10 days.  During our trip, we will visit four cities, Berlin, Dresden, Munich (München), and
Cologne (Köln).  This Webquest is designed to help you become better acquainted with at least one of those cites and to help you develop the skills that you need to plan a short trip to a city that you’ve never been to before.

Task

You have been assigned a city in
Germany that we are going to visit on our trip.  You are our travel agent for that particular city.  Pretend that each person has € 200 to spend on our two days in this city.  You will not have to worry about lodging, because that has already been arranged.

At the end of this project you will put together a PowerPoint presentation in German that includes the following:

City Background:  brief history and explanation of cultural significance of the city.

A brief tour:  Explain the history and main features of at least FIVE attractions. (examples: churches/cathedrals, architectural sites, shopping centers, universities, historical landmarks, parks, city squares/centers).  Tell me which stop on public transportation I will need to find to get there, or, if I am walking, the street address.

Getting around: Include a city map, subway or Straßenbahn map, or bus routes, depending on what is used in that city.

Restaurants and Cafes:  Select two restaurants or cafes per day (FOUR total) where you may want to stop and eat a meal or snack.  Include menus and prices or a brief description of what they serve, so you will know what to expect and how much to budget.

Local entertainment: We will have some free time in the evenings.  Choose TWO possible activities that we can participate in.  You may look for concerts, plays, movies, festivals, etc.  Make sure you find out when, where (how will we get there), and how much it will cost.

Process

Use the following websites, and any others that you find helpful, to plan our two days in your city.  First, take lots of notes, and keep track of your sources.  Once you have completed your research, design your PowerPoint presentation.

Conclusion

Congratulations!  You have demonstrated some of the skills necessary to plan a short trip abroad to a German city.  Hopefully, all of the students going to
Germany will have a greater understanding and appreciation for the things we will see and do when we visit the city you researched and presented.  On a trip to
Germany that you might plan from scratch, you would have to arrange for air transportation and lodging.  For more information on that, you can visit
www.lufthansa.com (Germany’s major airline that flies directly to Germany from
Charlotte) and
www.hihostels.com (Hostelling Internationals’ website that allows you to compare and book youth hostels all around the world).

Teacher Component

This Webquest was designed for my students of German, who were about to travel to
Germany, who were in their third year of German.  The presentation is meant to be done in the target language, but could easily be modified for less-advanced students to complete in English, or for more advanced students to fulfill additional requirements.

Most of the websites listed above provide companion sites in English.  This should be completed in 5-7 days, using some class time, but mostly completed at home, with adjustments made for students who do not have computer/internet/PowerPoint access at home.

This Webquest corresponds with NCSCOS Goal 3.03 Develop in writing an organized summary, composition, report, or article.
